Creating an Interactive Map
from: Adam SmithWhat is the real problem with charts and maps on the web? If you are like me you come across them all the time, but most of these charts and maps are painfully boring. Graphics are supposed to draw the user in and grab their attention. When you are visiting a website what are you looking for? Most of us are in searching for one of two things, information or entertainment. Unfortunately, not all of the sites we visit offer creative methods of presenting us the information and entertainment we desperately seek.
For those webmasters around the world whose charge it is to create and maintain our favorite sites I issue a challenge: make your site more interactive. It is really that simple. As humans we seek interactivity. Nothing bores us more than an environment in which we don’t feel we are fully involved.
One way to include more interactivity across the web is by making use of charting software . All of us visit sites with charts and maps, but too often these sites merely offer up static rudimentary charts and maps, but charting software can put the fun back into these charts and maps. Charting software can turn a boring dull map into a fun interactive map . In fact, using charting software to create interactive maps and charts can benefit both consumers and businesses.
For those who are consumers of the internet, more commonly known as web surfers, using interactive maps can really be entertaining. Google Maps has done a great job of offering us the ability to zoom in and out of streets, view major landmarks in the area, and print directions to locations of our choice. Another interesting spin on the idea of an interactive map has been offered by the technology news site News.com provided by CNET. For many of its news stories, CNET inserts a related story map next to the article. This story map serves up other related stories that might be of interest to users. In addition, the user has the option of changing the story map to a concept map, which contains related concepts that might also be of interest to the reader.
There are also other possibilities an interactive map and charting software can create for your business. Interactive maps can show a variety of different things to help businesses meet their needs:
1. Sales or profits to illustrate how a company is doing. Display data to the county level or, with an optional add-on
, to zip code.
2. Maps in executive dashboards to provide a geographic overview of the organization's activities.
3. Data-driven seating charts or diagrams of warehouses or factory floors.
4. Best image fallback ensuring the highest quality image is always displayed in the browser
5. Maps that meet 508 Compliance
Many great companies have produced great technology products which include powerful charting software to assist you in building your own custom interactive maps for the Net. One leading company that has developed such technology is Corda Technologies Inc. If you are interested in improving your site then be sure to visit the Corda website today.
